The Best Places to Cool Off in NYC

New York City in the summer is magical.

Until it's 97 degrees, the subway platforms feel approximately the temperature of the sun, and your iced coffee melts before you've crossed the street.

If you're visiting NYC during a heat wave, don't worry, we've got you covered! From museums and old book stores to indoor shopping and creative activities, there are plenty of ways to beat the heat without blowing your vacation budget.

Here are some of our favorite places to cool off in NYC this summer.

Chelsea Market

A classic NYC stop that’s worth more than just a quick walk-through.

This indoor market is full of cute shops and has plenty of great food vendors, our favorite hidden gem is Seed + Mill. Their vegan tahini soft serve has developed a bit of a cult following for good reason—it's creamy, not overly sweet, and perfect for a summer afternoon.

Argosy Book Store

Established in 1925, Argosy is New York City's oldest independent bookstore—and one of the city's best-kept secrets.

While the ground floor is packed with rare books and literary treasures, the real magic is upstairs. Entire floors are dedicated to vintage prints, antique maps, historical documents, and illustrations that feel like they belong in a museum.

You can easily spend hours flipping through old New York maps, botanical prints, and travel posters while escaping the summer heat.

Italian Charm Bracelets at The Niche Shop

Sometimes the best way to survive a heat wave is to simply step inside somewhere with great air conditioning.

At The Niche Shop, you can spend an hour (or three) building your own Italian charm bracelet from hundreds of unique charms inspired by New York City, travel, food, pets, pop culture, and more. Create a bracelet that perfectly captures your trip.

Bonus: both Upper East Side and Upper West locations are fully air-conditioned.

Spa Day at QC NY

If you're truly melting, consider taking cooling off to the next level.

Located on Governors Island, QC NY Spa offers relaxation rooms, wellness experiences, skyline views, and one of the trendiest summer activities right now: cold plunges.

The views of the city don't hurt either.

Color Factory

Part art exhibit, part playground, part photo opportunity.

Color Factory is one of NYC's most interactive museum experiences, with colorful installations, immersive rooms, and plenty of surprises throughout the experience. Unlike traditional museums, you're encouraged to touch, play, and interact with the exhibits.

It's fully indoors, fully air-conditioned, and a great option when the weather feels unbearable.

Kakigori at Little One

Tucked away on the Lower East Side, Little One serves some of the most refreshing summer treats in the city.

The menu features Japanese-inspired desserts including monaka ice cream sandwiches and kakigori, a fluffy shaved ice dessert that's basically the opposite of a heat wave.

Flavors include strawberry, green tea, peach, hojicha, and pineapple, though the pineapple version is our favorite for an especially refreshing summer afternoon pick-me-up.

Ford Foundation Atrium

One of the city's most underrated indoor escapes.

The Ford Foundation Atrium is a stunning public garden tucked inside a Midtown office building, complete with lush greenery, natural light, and plenty of places to sit. It's free to visit and feels like stepping into a secret oasis in the middle of Manhattan.

Broadway Matinee

Looking for a break from the summer heat?

A Broadway matinee might be your smartest move.

Many shows offer rush tickets that make seeing a Broadway production surprisingly affordable. Spend a few hours indoors enjoying one of New York's most iconic experiences while escaping the hottest part of the day.

The Lawn Club

Need something a little different and more action forward?

Head to The Lawn Club at the Seaport. Think backyard lawn games, but make it New York. Grab a drink, challenge your friends to a game, and enjoy a surprisingly fun activity that's great for groups.

Museum of the Moving Image

Located in Astoria, this museum is a must for movie, television, and pop culture lovers.

Exhibits explore everything from classic films to modern media, with interactive displays and behind-the-scenes looks at how entertainment is made. This museum is truly the kind that breaks the ‘boring’ stereotype, it's the type of museum that is genuinely fun.

The New York heat doesn't have to ruin your vacation. Some of the city's best summer activities happen indoors, from exploring museums and catching Broadway shows to building an Italian charm bracelet.

So the next time the forecast says 95 degrees, don't panic. Grab an iced coffee, find some air conditioning, and let New York do what it does best—give you endless things to do.
